CHAPTER FOUR
âJesus fucking shit, is that it? Are we done?â Lexi asked.
Sheâd been getting impatient for the past half hour, and I really felt for her. I felt for Hannah even more. She was out there in the cold, still providing overwatch. For almost an hour and a half. My head was spinning, at this point.
There was so much to do.
âYeah,â I said finally. âListen, I need you to stay here with the stuff, keep watch over it, maybe start organizing it. Iâm going to go get Hannah, send her to you. She needs to get warm. Iâll go back and check in with the others, bring one or two of them to help. We need to start hauling this stuff back home. Thereâs...thereâs a lot here.â
âYeah, there is. All right, Iâll get to work,â Lexi replied.
I nodded, already beginning to feel tired again, and knowing that I had a lot more to do today. Fuck, I was going to sleep long and well tonight. If I even made it that far. I might fucking pass out at around five or six oâclock. Which was still like ten hours off. I left the house that was a total wreck, heading back out into the brisk cold, which woke me up a little. Looking up, I could just barely make out Hannah on the hill, and only because I knew where to look and what to look for. I raised one hand and waved.
She stood up and waved back. Good, she hadnât passed out or something.
I started trudging towards her.
It had been a pretty uneventful hour and a half, since weâd killed the last guy. Thereâd been no other survivors, and in the end, weâd counted out seven of them in total. Six in the house, and one next door in the store that Hannah had shot right after Iâd opened up with the machine gun. There were no other survivors.
At least as far as I could tell. Hannah wouldâve shot anyone else, and weâd just spent the past ninety minutes sweeping the whole area. We went as quickly as we could, searching every building, every room, every closet. Basically everywhere we could. We hadnât found a hint of anyone else. And although several of the buildings were pretty much empty, not all of them were. And fucking hell, had there been a good store of supplies.
Bullets. There were a lot of bullets. Hundreds. Maybe a few thousand. Mostly shotgun shells and nine millimeters, but a really good supply of tons of other calibers. And food. There were hundreds of cans of food. They had medicine, like military grade stuff that would last for years to come. I had no idea where they had found all this shit. There were other things, like gas-masks and thermal blankets and high quality boots and building materials. Most of it was stored in the convenience store next to the house, but some of it was in the garage weâd seen earlier. There was enough there to keep us well-fed for like two years minimum.
